Last year 20th Century Fox distributed a film called "Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter" that got an abysmal 35% rating on !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . The idea of Abe Lincoln battling a group of vampires is about as far fetched as taking a 5-speed Lincoln apex hunting on a race track...but one actually happened.
When someone mentions a late model, rear drive, manual transmission, 6-cylinder luxury sedan with a sophisticated double-wishbone front & rear suspension - thoughts immediately jump to BMW, perhaps a rare low option Mercedes, or something from Lexus/Infiniti. You may be surprised to learn that such a vehicle was indeed designed, built and assembled in Michigan at Lincoln's now dead Wixom Assembly plant. Find this !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for sale in Kent, OH offered on ebay for $8,998 buy-it-now. The LS V6 was the first 5-speed equipped car from Lincoln (recently re-branded as the Lincoln Motor Car Company) in almost 50 years and only lasted 2 years in production.
Using a historical figure to stake vampires in the heart is about as preposterous as expecting a Lincoln to be "fun," but it hasn't always been this way. In the pre-war era big V12 powered Lincolns were surprisingly quick and competed head-to-head with other high-end fast luxury cars. The post war era wasn't so kind to Lincoln's image and the last time they produced a manual transmission car was in 1951 (the Cosmopolitan)...until the 2000 LS was released. The manual was only available with the base V6 and the sport package and probably sold in the dozens, but the "Betty White in a sports bra" LS was cool enough to win Motor Trend's 2000 Car of the Year award...actually based on the number of Lincoln full paged ads in the mag...but still...gotta mean something.
The base LS is powered by a 3.0 liter Duratec V6 that puts 210 horsepower and 220 ft-lbs of torque into a Getrag 5-speed manual gearbox. It was a surprising twist from the company that paints most of its vehicles in walker grey , hospital smock blue and hearing aid beige . The performance from the 3600 lb sedan isn't extraordinary, but the double wishbone front/rear suspension from the Ford DEW98 platform (shared with Jaguar S-Type) gives it decent handling and it should drive like a softer version of a BMW 5-series.
The inside of the LS is in good shape, as it should be for a 33k mile example that we imagine could have been purchased and only driven on the weekends by a little old lady. Who knows, it could have been owned by a lunatic who took it to the track on the weekends and let a family of racoons live in the trunk - but we always imagine that previous owners were nice, regardless of the truth.
This LS would make a great commuter car and be a bit of a sleeper fun car- beige and boring on the outside, but fun inside. See a better fake 5-Series? email us here:

This, and the equivalent Jaguar S-Type manual. Tough choice.
The Lincoln is cheaper, but the Jag does have the cute cat on the hood.
Too bad there was no Lincoln version of the S-Type R though.

My father had a (sadly auto) LS when it came out. It was the only Lincoln I'd driven since the ones made in the 60s that was worth having, which surprised me at the time. The new cars are much better, but they still have a ways to go.
Neat to see one with 3 pedals.

I want this.
Of course, I also wish it had the 3.9L V8 (or bigger), but this is a great start.

I find the Lincoln's lines to be more pleasing to the eye - the S-Type is just so fussy looking, esp the front end/grill treatment. The LS is boring like having a box of prunes and bottle of Ensure for lunch - but in a good way.

This would make a VERY GOOD commuter car/DD.
I think a similar vintage IS300 would still be a better choice though.

No Jaaag V8 makes me sad, even if they didn't come with a manual. The autos had a gear-selection and were a proper 5 speed instead of a 3/4 speed, so they probably weren't terrible.

My friend had an Automatic LS that was actually very, very nice. It is a surprising car in the power, delivery, and handling. I also found the Lincoln appointments on the interior to be pretty classy. This one with the third pedal has to be pretty special.

Someone put an LS1/6-spd into a 2002 Lincoln LS a while back - was asking $13k - which seems like a great deal if everything was done well.

True. More recent disappearances hurt about as much.

The LS V8's are actually a pretty fun car to drive. The "autostick" is not the best, early models wouldn't let you select first from a stop.
I was considering buying one when I was looking for a car, I found an '05 with just over 100k on the odo and the guy was asking $5,000 for it. It was the ivory with the camel interior which is why I hesitated, when I finally decided to pull the trigger the car was sold.
There are common issues with the Jag motor and the electricals but they are common and easy fixes, well for me at least. I spent a good 3 years working at a Lincoln dealer fixing these cars. They can actually get a pretty aggressive alignment on them too. The later ones had Advancetrac so the stability control was pretty aggressive and wouldn't let you get into too much trouble.
I actually really do like these cars.

If this car had aftermarket support, I would love to have one. But has anyone made tunes or performance parts for this duratec mill? I doubt it :(

The V6 manual is the most rare out of these cars. I've only seen and been in one. This looks in good condition, but the price will get you a better equipped later production V8. The '00-'01 cars are not the best LS' to get into. from '02 up they got better and more refined. Too bad even with this low mileage you will still have to deal with the crap window regulators and the horrid factory radio. . .

Funny cause Henry Leland was actually old enough to have hunted vampires with Lincoln.
